Chase Coleman
Chase Coleman runs Tiger Global Management, the investment firm he founded in 2001. After earning a BA in economics and Spanish from Williams College in 1997, he went to work as a technology analyst at Tiger Management, the hedge fund run by Julian Robertson. When Robertson shut that firm down in 2000, he handed Coleman more than $25 million in seed capital to strike out on his own, making Coleman one of the original "Tiger Cubs," the apprentices Robertson backed to start their own funds. Tiger Global blends two businesses under one roof: a public-markets hedge fund and a venture capital arm that buys stakes in private companies, with an emphasis on high-growth technology businesses around the world. Coleman pioneered a crossover approach that lets the firm back the same kinds of companies from early private rounds through their time as publicly traded stocks, concentrating on a small number of names it believes are being reshaped by digital change. The origin story is the one worth retelling. When Robertson closed Tiger Management at the turn of the century, he did not simply disband his team; he turned his protégés into competitors by funding them, and Coleman became one of the most successful of that group, turning his early stake into a firm that has since become one of the largest and most recognizable names in technology investing.
