Josh Tarasoff
Josh Tarasoff runs Greenlea Lane Capital, the one-man private partnership he founded in 2006 and has run ever since without a formal office. A philosophy major at Duke, class of 2001, he started in investment banking at Goldman Sachs before trying his hand at a non-profit venture. It was during that detour, reading Warren Buffett's shareholder letters, that he had what he describes as his moment of clarity about value investing. He went on to earn an MBA from Columbia Business School, where he took part in its value investing program. Tarasoff launched Greenlea Lane with $2.3 million in seed capital and describes his approach as a "self-driving portfolio." He looks for high-quality businesses with durable competitive advantages — often built on network effects or other feedback loops — that he believes he can own indefinitely. The horizon is deliberately near-infinite: by removing the pressure to trade, he argues, an investor makes better decisions and the portfolio increasingly runs itself. He confines himself to companies within his circle of competence and holds for very long stretches with minimal turnover, preferring permanent ownership over the buy-and-sell churn of conventional value investing. The firm stays deliberately small and unconventional for a reason: Greenlea Lane has remained a single-person operation since its founding, an arrangement Tarasoff sees as a feature rather than a constraint, letting him hold concentrated positions in a handful of businesses he understands deeply without answering to institutional pressures.
