A maker of automatic cloud backup software, Carbonite protects files for home users and businesses, quietly copying documents, photos, and emails to the cloud so they can be restored if a hard drive fails, a laptop is stolen, or ransomware strikes. Founded in 2005 in Boston by serial entrepreneurs David Friend and Jeff Flowers after Friend's daughter lost a term paper to a crashed hard drive, the company's name comes from the Star Wars substance that froze Han Solo in carbonite — a nod to "freezing" your data for safekeeping.
