Founded in 2005 in Boston by serial entrepreneurs David Friend and Jeff Flowers after Friend's daughter lost a term paper to a crashed hard drive, the company's name comes from the Star Wars substance that froze Han Solo in carbonite — a nod to "freezing" your data for safekeeping.
