A maker of the automated teller machines found inside convenience stores, grocery stores and pharmacies, Cardtronics ran and maintained one of the world's largest networks of retail ATMs, including its surcharge-free Allpoint network used by millions of cardholders. Founded in 1993 in Houston as Cardpro, the company later took its name by combining "card" with "electronics," grew by buying up smaller ATM operators, and was acquired by NCR in 2021. A fun retelling: at its peak, roughly one in every twelve ATMs in the United States belonged to its Allpoint network.
