A US pharmaceutical company focused on treatments for brain and nervous-system diseases, most notably simufilam, an experimental oral drug for Alzheimer's disease. It began in 1998 as Pain Therapeutics, founded in Austin, Texas, by Remi Barbier and Jacques Barbut, before rebranding as Cassava Sciences in 2019 to pivot toward neuroscience — a name drawn from the cassava plant, whose starchy roots are a food staple in South America. The company later renamed itself Filana Therapeutics.
