Celgene Corporation

A biopharmaceutical company that developed treatments for cancer and immune-system diseases, best known for the drugs Revlimid and Thalomid. It was founded in 1986 as a spinoff of the chemical giant Celanese Corporation, and its name blends "Celan[ese]" with "gene." The company famously rescued thalidomide — the sedative linked to birth defects and banned in the late 1950s — and decades later turned it into an approved treatment for multiple myeloma. In 2019 Bristol Myers Squibb acquired Celgene.
