Change Healthcare Inc.
A company that runs the digital plumbing of the U.S. healthcare system, Change Healthcare moves medical bills and insurance claims between doctors, hospitals, and payers. It grew out of Emdeon, a claims processor launched in 2006, which in 2014 bought a 2007 startup also called Change Healthcare and adopted that name itself in 2015; after a 2017 joint venture with drug distributor McKesson, it became part of UnitedHealth Group's Optum division in 2022. The quirky twist: the big company took its name from the small startup it had swallowed.
