One arm, VITAS Healthcare, is one of the nation's largest providers of end-of-life hospice and palliative care. The other is Roto-Rooter, America's best-known plumbing and drain-cleaning brand, serving homes and businesses alike. The company was born in 1970 as a chemical-and-medical spinoff of W.R. Grace, which is where its blended name comes from. Fun fact: Roto-Rooter's founder built the first machine in 1933 from a washing-machine motor, roller skate wheels, and a cable with homemade blades.
