An independent oil and gas company that explores for, drills, and produces crude oil and liquids-rich natural gas, chiefly in Colorado's Denver-Julesburg Basin and the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. It was born in 2021 when two Colorado producers, Bonanza Creek and Extraction Oil & Gas, merged, then grew by absorbing Crestone Peak and Bison Oil & Gas. Its name comes from the Latin "civitas," meaning community or citizenship — fitting for a company that bills itself as Colorado's first carbon-neutral oil and gas producer. In 2026 it was absorbed into SM Energy.
