A maker of handbags, wallets, and other leather goods under the Coach brand, one of America's best-known fashion houses. It began in 1941 as a family-run leather workshop in a Manhattan loft, where founder Miles Cahn got the idea for its signature soft leather after noticing how baseball gloves grew more supple with wear. The name nods to the "coach and harness" leatherwork the founder admired — a sly wink at the carriage trade.
