Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

A biopharmaceutical company that developed injectable diabetes medicines. Its flagship product, Byetta (exenatide), was one of the first widely used GLP-1 receptor agonist treatments for type 2 diabetes, while Symlin (pramlintide) targeted the hormone amylin to help control blood sugar after meals. Founded in 1987 in San Diego, the company took its name from that same hormone — amylin, the protein its scientists set out to study and mimic. Bristol-Myers Squibb acquired Amylin in 2012.
