Covance Inc.
A drug-development services firm, Covance ran the lab testing and clinical trials that help pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical-device companies prove their products are safe and effective. Born in 1997 when Corning spun off its pharmaceutical services arm, its roots go back to Hazleton Laboratories, a toxicology research firm founded in 1946. Fun fact: the "Covance" name was invented as a brand to unify acquired businesses, and the company later reported a hand in developing every one of the top fifty best-selling drugs of its era. In 2015 it was acquired by Labcorp and now lives on as Labcorp Drug Development and its spin-off Fortrea.
