Winthrop Realty Trust
A real estate investment trust that owned office, retail, and commercial properties, plus commercial mortgage loans and stakes in other REITs. It began in 1961 as First Union Real Estate Equity and Mortgage Investments, then renamed itself Winthrop Realty Trust in 2005 — largely to shed confusion with the unrelated First Union bank. The company adopted a plan of liquidation in 2014 and wound down through a liquidating trust, making its final distributions in early 2020.
