A maker of medical devices, supplies, and pharmaceuticals, Covidien was born in 2007 when Tyco International spun off its healthcare division. Its well-known brands—Nellcor pulse oximeters, Puritan Bennett ventilators, and Valleylab surgical tools—equip hospitals worldwide. The name blends "co-" (togetherness) with the Latin "vita" (life), chosen from roughly six thousand candidates. Medtronic absorbed the company in 2015.
