A discount online retailer that started by selling surplus and overstocked merchandise directly to shoppers, and later grew into a broad marketplace for home furnishings and lifestyle goods. Founder Patrick Byrne launched it in 1999 after buying a small struggling company that served the flea-market industry and relaunching it as Overstock.com within months. The name came from a brainstorming session Byrne held with American college students in China, who voted on the winning moniker.
