Cytec Industries Inc.
A maker of specialty chemicals and advanced materials, Cytec Industries was long known for the carbon-fiber composite materials used to build aircraft, along with water-treatment and mining chemicals. The company spun off from American Cyanamid in 1993, which itself began in 1907 making a nitrogen fertilizer called calcium cyanamide. The name "Cytec" is a blend of "Cyanamid" and "technology." Its aerospace materials business later became part of the Belgian group Solvay and now lives on under the name Syensqo.
