The brand grew from the Shonac Corporation, founded in 1969 by the Schottenstein family of Columbus, Ohio, and opened its first Designer Shoe Warehouse store in Dublin, Ohio in 1991. The family's retail roots stretch back to Ephraim Schottenstein, who emigrated from Lithuania and sold overstocked goods from a horse and buggy in Columbus.
