A hotel company that owned, managed, and franchised some of the world's best-known hotel brands, including Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis, and W Hotels. It began in 1969 as a real estate trust called Hotel Investors Trust, then was reorganized in 1995 by investor Barry Sternlicht, who gave it the name "Starwood" after a neighborhood in Aspen, Colorado where he was scouting properties. In 2016, Marriott International acquired the company, folding its brands into the world's largest hotel chain.
