Dover Corp
A diversified maker of specialized industrial equipment, Dover builds pumps, fluid-handling systems, refrigeration parts, and automotive lifts used by factories, repair shops, and the energy and food industries. It was created in 1955 when New York stockbroker George Ohrstrom grouped four small manufacturing firms he had bought — including Rotary Lift, which still makes the hydraulic lifts under many a mechanic's car — under one roof. Amusingly, the company's name doesn't point to any product: it's simply a nod to the port city of Dover, England.
