Its lead drug, efruxifermin, is a once-weekly injectable that mimics the natural hormone FGF21 to help the body regulate fat and sugar. Founded in 2017 by scientists and the venture firm Apple Tree Partners, it began life as Pippin Therapeutics before renaming itself Akero in 2018. Its signature drug was originally discovered at Amgen and licensed in — a drug that began life treating diabetes now aims at the liver.
