Ecopetrol S.a.

A Colombian state-owned oil and gas company, Ecopetrol explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas, then refines them into gasoline, diesel, and other fuels at its two big refineries in Barrancabermeja and Cartagena, moving it all through thousands of kilometers of pipelines. It was created by the Colombian government in 1948 and took over the country's oil fields in 1951 when the foreign-run Mares Concession legally reverted to the state — a moment so celebrated that church bells tolled, car horns honked, and river steamers sounded their sirens as the national anthem played. Its name is a blend of its original full title, Empresa Colombiana de Petróleos.
