Edwards Lifesciences Corporation
A maker of replacement heart valves, from the SAPIEN transcatheter valves threaded to the heart through a thin tube instead of open surgery to surgical valves like INSPIRIS RESILIA. It began in 1958 when Miles "Lowell" Edwards, a retired hydraulic engineer who once built fuel pumps, teamed with surgeon Albert Starr to build an artificial heart — a goal that instead yielded the first Starr-Edwards ball-and-cage valve. It later spun off from Baxter in 2000.
