An independent oil and natural gas producer that snapped up aging, abandoned Gulf of Mexico oilfields that bigger companies had left behind, then used modern drilling technology to squeeze out their remaining reserves. Founded in 2005 by John Schiller, it grew into one of the largest independent producers in the region's shallow waters. Its name, Energy XXI, spells "21" in Roman numerals, a nod to the 21st century the company was built for.
