Energy Transfer Partners, L.p.
A massive mover of American energy, Energy Transfer operates roughly 140,000 miles of pipelines that carry natural gas and natural gas liquids from wells to refineries, power plants, and export terminals across the United States. Founded in Dallas in 1996 by Kelcy Warren and Ray Davis, it started as a small East Texas gas pipeline operator with about two hundred miles of line and a couple dozen employees. The name was chosen simply to describe the company's core job—and it built the first 42-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline in Texas.
Limited partner units — Merged into Energy Transfer LP (NYSE: ET) in October 2018
