A real estate investment trust that owned and operated commercial office properties across the United States. It began as CommonWealth REIT, founded in 1986 by Barry Portnoy, whose family's outside firm ran the company. In 2014, activist investors won a board proxy battle and brought famed real-estate investor Sam Zell in as chairman, renaming the firm Equity Commonwealth. By 2025 the company had sold its remaining office buildings, left the stock exchange, and folded its assets into a liquidating trust.
