A financial middleman that stands between buyers and sellers of exchange-listed options, guaranteeing every trade gets settled even if one side backs out. Born in 1973 as the clearing arm of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, it was renamed at the SEC's urging and soon became the clearinghouse for all U.S. listed options. Its first home was a converted "musty smoking room" adjoining the Chicago Board of Trade's futures floor.
