A maker of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries for cars, trucks, forklifts, and telecom and utility systems. The company began in 1888 as the Electric Storage Battery Company, founded by W.W. Gibbs, and its "Exide" brand name comes from "Excellent Oxide," a nod to the lead oxide inside its batteries. Exide batteries powered the U.S. Navy's first submarine in 1898 and Cadillac's first electric starter in 1912.
