Exponent, Inc.
A global engineering and scientific consulting firm that investigates why things fail — from product recalls and structural collapses to car crashes and industrial accidents. Founded in 1967 in Palo Alto by Stanford professors and researchers as Failure Analysis Associates, its experts figure out root causes for companies, insurers, and courts. It renamed itself Exponent in 1998 to reflect its wider reach, and its sleuths have probed disasters like the 1974 Turkish Airlines DC-10 crash and the Amoco Cadiz oil spill.
