Founder Kenneth Woolley was inspired while studying at Stanford, building his first facility in Billings, Montana under the name "Secure-it Mini Storage" before the brand grew into Extra Space Storage. Today it's the largest U.S. self-storage operator, managing stores for other owners and even reinsuring tenants' goods against loss.
