A maker of natural-gas compression, processing and treating equipment, Exterran Holdings built and ran the machinery that keeps gas flowing through pipelines for energy companies. Born in 2007 from the merger of Universal Compression and Hanover Compressor — firms whose roots go back to the 1954 founding of South Coast Gas Company — the company's operational history spans more than half a century. In 2015 it split in two, spinning off its international arm into a new Exterran Corporation while renaming its U.S. compression business Archrock.
