A Hawaii-based real estate company that owns and operates neighborhood shopping centers, industrial properties, and offices across the islands — it is the state's largest owner of grocery-anchored retail centers. The company traces back to 1870, when childhood friends Samuel Alexander and Henry Baldwin planted their first sugarcane crop on Maui and later built the Hāmākua Ditch, an irrigation system that carried water from Haleakalā's slopes to the arid plains of Central Maui. That sugar partnership eventually grew into the land-and-property business that still bears both founders' names.
