Alere Inc
A maker of rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests, Alere produced quick-result tests for HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and heart conditions that doctors, clinics, and pharmacies could run in minutes. Founded in 1991 by Ron Zwanziger as SelfCare, the company grew through acquisitions and renamed itself Alere in 2010 — a Latin word meaning "to nourish" or "to care for." Its BinaxNOW test line later became famous under Abbott, which bought Alere in 2017.
