A maker of fiber-optic components that carry high-speed data across telecom networks and data centers, Finisar built the optical transceivers and laser-based sensors that power the modern internet. Founded in 1988 in California by astronomy PhD Frank Levinson, the company pioneered vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) — the tiny light sources later found in Apple's Face ID. It merged with Optium in 2008 and was absorbed by II-VI (now Coherent) in 2019.
