Algoma Steel Group Inc.
A major integrated steel producer based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Algoma Steel makes hot and cold rolled steel sheet and plate used in everything from cars to construction, and rolls the widest steel plate in Canada. It was founded in 1901 by American entrepreneur Francis Clergue, who built the plant to feed on local iron ore from the Helen Mine in Wawa, which he named after his sister. The company rolled Canada's first steel rail in 1902, and its name comes from a word coined by explorer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft meaning "Sea of the Algonquins."
