A specialty grocery chain inspired by the open-air food markets its founders saw on a trip to Europe. Ray and Beverly Berry opened the first store in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1982, stocking fresh produce, hand-trimmed meat, and artisanal goods in a cozy setting where classical music and the aroma of freshly roasted coffee greet shoppers at the door. The company remains headquartered in the city where it began.
