A North American distributor of specialty building materials, GMS supplies contractors with drywall (wallboard), acoustical ceilings, steel framing, and insulation through a network of local subsidiaries that operate under their own regional names. It traces to 1971, when three partners launched Gypsum Management and Supply in a rented Atlanta distribution yard. Its acronym name reflects that founding focus on gypsum, and the founders are said to have built the business on a handshake.
