Galapagos NV
A Belgian biotech company headquartered in Mechelen discovers and develops medicines, including Jyseleca (filgotinib), a treatment approved for rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis. It was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between Crucell and Tibotec. The founders named it for the Galapagos Islands—a nod to biodiversity and discovery—and the islands themselves take their name from galápago, the old Spanish word for tortoise.
