A US home-health care company, Gentiva sends nurses, aides, chaplains, and social workers into people's homes to provide hospice, palliative, and home health care for patients with serious or life-limiting illnesses. It grew out of the healthcare arm of the Olsten Corporation, founded in 1946, and was spun off as its own publicly traded company in 1999. The name Gentiva isn't a dictionary word—it was coined to echo the Latin root for "clan" and "gentle," so the company literally wears its caring mission in its name.
