A defense and aerospace maker that grew out of a 1990 spinoff of Honeywell's defense businesses. It built the solid rocket boosters that helped launch NASA's space shuttles and made ammunition and outdoor gear under brands like Federal Premium. Its name came from "alliance," reflecting its close ties to the U.S. Defense Department. In 2015 it spun off its sporting group as Vista Outdoor and merged its aerospace and defense units with Orbital Sciences to form Orbital ATK.
