Great Plains Energy Incorporated
A holding company based in Kansas City, Missouri, that oversaw Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L), the electric utility serving homes and businesses across Missouri and Kansas. Its roots reach back to 1882, when a young man named Edwin Weeks, inspired by an arc-light demonstration, helped start the Kawsmouth Electric Light Company and brought electricity to Kansas City. Great Plains Energy itself was formed in 2001 as KCP&L's holding company, and in 2018 it merged with Westar Energy to create the utility now known as Evergy.
