A maker of freight railcars, The Greenbrier Companies designs, builds, leases, and maintains everything from tank cars for liquids to grain hoppers and double-stack intermodal cars, plus its own Auto-Max automotive carriers. Its roots trace to a Portland, Oregon steel shop the Gunderson brothers founded in 1919, and the modern company took shape in 1981 when two partners bought a leasing business called Greenbrier Leasing Corporation. Fun quirk: the name comes from that acquisition, not from the famous Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.
