Hatteras Financial Corp

A mortgage real estate investment trust, or REIT, based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Founded in 2007 by the Hough brothers, it bought single-family home loans guaranteed by U.S. government agencies like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae, earning income from the spread between interest earned and borrowing costs. Its name nods to North Carolina's Cape Hatteras, home of the famous black-and-white Outer Banks lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in America.
