Alpha Natural Resources Inc
A coal mining company that digs up both thermal coal for power plants and metallurgical coal for steelmaking, pulling it from the Appalachian hills. It was founded in 2002 by its own managers and a private equity firm to buy up coal operations, and it grew by gobbling up rivals. One retellable quirk: the company went bankrupt in 2015, resurfaced as Contura Energy, and in 2021 brought back the "Alpha" name to honor its roots and refocus on steel coal.
