Heartware International Inc

A maker of miniature heart pumps, HeartWare International developed the HVAD—short for HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device—an implantable pump that helps failing hearts move blood. Founded in 2003 out of a bankrupt Sacramento company called Kriton, it began as HeartWare in Sydney, Australia before moving its headquarters to Framingham, Massachusetts. The pump was famously tiny, about the size of a walnut, allowing surgeons to place it directly against the heart, and in 2016 the company was absorbed by medical giant Medtronic.
