A maker of open-source big-data software built around Apache Hadoop, letting companies store and analyze huge amounts of information across clusters of computers. Founded in 2011 by a team of engineers who spun out of Yahoo—where Hadoop was born—it offered the Hortonworks Data Platform. The name is a nod to Dr. Seuss's Horton the Elephant, a fitting choice since Hadoop itself is named after its creator's son's stuffed toy elephant.
