A maker of precision components for the data storage industry, Hutchinson Technology built the suspension assemblies that hold the read-write heads of hard disk drives at microscopic distances above the spinning disks. Founded in 1965 by Jon Geiss and Jeffrey Green, the company got its start in a chicken coop in Hutchinson, Minnesota, first making gyroscope parts for missiles before pivoting to disk drives in the late 1970s. It was acquired by the Japanese electronics giant TDK in 2016.
