A maker of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) — chips that engineers can reconfigure even after they're installed — Altera's Agilex, Stratix, and Cyclone families power data centers, telecom networks, and aerospace gear. Founded in 1983 by four semiconductor veterans, the company's name plays on "alterable," since its chips could be reprogrammed by users. In 2025 it became an independent company again after spinning off from Intel.
