A for-profit college company that ran the familiar ITT Technical Institute (ITT Tech) chain, teaching hands-on programs in fields like information technology, electronics, business, and drafting across dozens of states. It grew out of a publisher: in 1963 the Indianapolis firm Howard W. Sams & Co., famous for its PHOTOFACT radio and TV repair manuals, opened the Sams Technical Institute with just 28 students, and the "ITT" name came from the telecom giant International Telephone and Telegraph that later bought it. A fun quirk: a school famous for training technicians was born from the pages of a repair manual.
