The idea was born in a Motorola lab in 1987, and the network launched in 1998, only to go bankrupt a year later before investors rescued the satellites from being deorbited. It's named 'Iridium' because the original design called for 77 satellites, matching the atomic number of the element iridium, though the final constellation uses 66.
