An exchange-traded fund that lets everyday investors buy bitcoin without holding the cryptocurrency themselves, launched in January 2024 by BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. The fund's shares trade on a stock exchange under the ticker IBIT, with each share backed by actual bitcoin held in custody by Coinbase. It's part of the iShares family, BlackRock's well-known lineup of index funds, and was among the first batch of spot bitcoin ETFs approved in the US that year.
